Of average height and build, Erik is not much to look at. Yet, in a land of giants and warriors, his name strikes as much fear into people’s hearts, as does Emperor Saif. Born to commoners, Erik grew up detesting poverty. To be rich, he knew he needed to be powerful. Once a student of the old wizard Kiral, Erik loathed the old man’s soft nature. Erik craved power, and believed those who showed kindness were weak. He wished to one day be the wizard to the emperor, so he stayed with the old fool, and learned. On the day that he finally mastered the last of the great spells Kiral knew, he left. Waiting till night fall, Erik used his key and entered his former master’s keep. He managed to get his hands on the old man’s magical staff. Before he could leave, Kiral awoke. They battled for hours, launching horrible and deadly spells at one another. Though old, Kiral had been a wizard of the first order for many years. His crafty skills in battle, allowed him to withstand Erik’s obvious advantage with the staff. In the end, it wasn’t enough. His strength failing him, the old man was unable to escape the ball of fire that came flying towards him. Engulfed in flames, his skin and bones melted from the intense heat. The victor, Erik now took his time searching through all of his master’s belonging. When he finally left the keep, Erik was more powerful then he had ever managed. The old fool had powerful and dangerous spells of the Arcane that he had never learned. He had kept them locked away, hidden by layers of protective magic. It had taken Erik days, but he had finally managed to break the spells and claim his prize.
After a few more years of service, Erik finally achieved his desire. On the day he was named to the emperor’s service, he had killed the former first wizard. In the empire, no challenge could be ignored. By killing the wizard, Erik had taken his rank and his position. That evening, the emperor threw a feast in Erik’s honor. As he was leaving for the grand hall, Erik was summoned to the emperor’s chambers. Expecting to receive more gifts, he was unprepared for his final gift. As he entered the chamber, a guard darted out from the corner and snapped a golden collar around his neck. Furious, Erik directed his staff at the man, to blast the man from existence. He was stunned, when nothing happened. Then he heard the laughter. He turned to face the Emperor. Seeing the amusement on Saif’s face, he bowed his head. Saif then informed him what it really meant to be the emperor’s wizard. Being the most powerful wizard in the empire, he was still to be a slave. For as long as he wore the collar, he could be controlled. Saif would decide when and if he could use his power. The collar could be used to give pain or pleasure. Any attempt to remove the collar would bring the wearer unbearable pain. It was at that moment Erik both feared and hated the man he had chosen to serve. He swore to one day remove the collar, and get his vengeance.
